Nottingham NOW97

Random Access Memory Jointly Activated Music

As part of the Nottingham NOW97 Arts Festival Hex were commissioned to produce an interactive club night at the Bomb in Nottingham. Robert Pepperell designed a system based on a series of distributed buttons connected to a sampler. The buttons were presented in custom built consoles and allowed people in the club to trigger a series of sound clips which were mixed in with an ambient back-beat provided by the DJ. In this way the audience and DJ could collaborate with each other to make a performance.

There were 5 audio consoles and a video console which triggered audio-visual clips mixed in with a CDi input. The overall result was a delicious cacophony of sound and image which everyone enjoyed massively.

The theme of the evening was MAGIC All the sounds and images referred to the human pre-occupation with the supernatural and the possibility of power that lies within and beyond us. Here are sompe samples of the philosophical slogans that were part of the visual mix (© Robert Pepperell).

Don't emulate what an artist did, but what they failed to do.
